A Communion Cake and a Broken Ankle!

A while ago a good friend of mine asked me if I would mind making a cake for her little cousins’ First Communion, naturally I said yes. The request came in on Thursday for a “Chocolate cake, Chocolate Ganache filling, and vanilla buttercream, with NO fondant”. Yummo!

So late morning on Friday I get started on the cake, then the frosting, and then the ganache filling. Somewhere in there I head out for a 6 mile run, come for for some core exercises, and then at leisure I get cleaned up and grabbed some late lunch/ early dinner. I’m working at pretty laid back pace. As I let the buttercream iced cake set up (firm up) in the fridge, I created a huge batch of gum paste flowers for a decorative branch of flowers to crawl up the side of the cakeIMG_8545

Here at this time in the evening I thought I had lots of time to work away at the cake and refine the little details; so I thought. Before I knew it I recieved the phone call from my sister who is at the hospital. She plays in a ba-zillion co-ed soccer games a week and by no fault of her own pretty much embarrasses everyone else on the soccer field with her footwork and scoring abilities; it’s actually quite fun to watch a 5 foot nothing female running/dancing around 6”+ guys on the field who take their weekly soccer game as serious as the English Premiership (which by the way if you are following, Man Utd pretty much just cemented the win yesterday!). Here in lies the problem, sometimes the “gentlemen” on the other teams just don’t appreciate my sister’s talents as much as I do, and there for they attempt to “remove” her from the game or at least give her a hard enough knock that she’ll “remember them” the next time she goes up against them on a one on one. In case you’re wondering why I don’t play soccer anymore it’s mainly because of this problem she has; it’s just when I used to play on her team and hey would “send her a physical message” they’d usually end up receiving a return “message” from me to their knees or otherwise unspoken area!!… and thus I received more red cards than I would have at Christmas. It took all the fun out of the game, and after a few good tackles to my own ankles I hung up my cleats.

ANYWAYS, I received a call from my big sis who endured a wild hit the night before and decided to decline my ride to the hospital and sleep it off. I guess after an entire day of standing on the foot as a school teacher she conceded to the pain and drove herself to the doc. YUP, broke. Broke in several places at that, and with an MRI to come later the week we’ll know the ligament damage and surgery possibilities! So what does this have to do with my cake? Well now I’m going to get her from the hospital since this was her right foot! Since the family I was making the cake for cared more about the taste than the look I found myself rushing. I had to drop a lot of details from the planned design, but in the end I thought it looked okay. I would like to “re-make” this cake and clean up the buttercream job, add the branch beneath flowers, and some greens. Without further ado here are the few pictures that I was able to grab before running out the door to the hospital.

Not the prettiest piece of work that I’ve put together to date, but apparently the family and all 32 guests decimated the cake in a record time. And for me what is most important is that the family was happy!

I know this was probably a short post, but I’m going to go back to the couch now and finish drinking beers with my sister! Misery loves company!

Happy Monday!

Best wishes for your sister's speedy recovery - the cake looks pretty darn good, considering!

Good luck to our sister. I hope surgery is not required and that she recovers quickly!

Tell your sister I feel her pain (literally..). At least it wasn't right before your wedding - my last stunt landed me as the bridesmaid on crutches two weeks before my best friends wedding.

One solution is to get good running shoes. Try them on and see which one's fit the best.
